Polish Pickup October 2019: Urban Legends Swatches and Reviews

*press samples*

Hi guys! OMG, can you believe it's October already? It feels like yesterday it was July, am I right? Polish Pickup is coming up this weekend, and this month's inspiration is Urban Legends. There are sooo many urban legends out there, so I am super interested in seeing where makers go with this one. In case you're new to PPU, this is how it works:

Definitely join the Polish Pickup Facebook Group. You don't necessarily need to actively participate in the group, but it will give you a look at the polishes that will be available in the coming month. PPU themes are chosen by the people, often a few months in advance (brands need time to find their inspiration and test their polish). Any indie brand that has been around for at least a year can participate and each has their own specific inspiration picture and polish for that month. All you need to do is go to the Polish Pickup site during the pre-order window (the first Friday-Monday of the month) to make all of your purchases of these exclusive polishes. There's no need to pay for multiple shipping charges; since this is a pre-order, all polishes get sent to Polish Pickup and they send you the polishes you ordered. Yup, it's that simple. Oh, and shipping is a flat-rate of $3 to the US ($5 for Canada and more for international). Recently they also opened a UK site which you can find here. Since all orders are pre-orders, shipping will take place about 3 weeks after the end of the pre-order.

PPU starts Friday, Oct. 4th at 11:00 AM ET and ends on Monday, Oct. 7th at 11:59 PM (but if a polish has a cap and sells out before the end of the pre-order, it's gone, unless you get lucky and the cap gets raised...which is rare) on the PPU websiteI have a whopping five PPU shades to share with you this month, so I decided to combine these into one post. Go ahead and hit that button to see these beauties.

Literary Lacquers This Dish is Cheap Yet Tasty (2 coats)
Price: $13
Cap: No Cap
InspirationMy inspiration is from my favorite urban legend that has also become a little joke between me and my best friend. I've heard this urban legend a few ways. In the first, older variant, a woman loved the Chinese characters on her menu so much that she knitted them into a sweater. In the newer version, it's a tattoo, but the end result is the same. The unsuspecting woman finds out much later that her sweater/tattoo says "This Dish is Cheap Yet Tasty." The color is inspired by my best friend and her obsession with anything Magenta

What a stunner! I feel like there aren't many pure linear holo polishes out there right now. This Dish is Cheap Yet Tasty is an extremely pigmented magenta linear holo that apparently can stamp. I didn't have a chance to test that out, but this one is definitely mostly opaque in 1 coat (I used 2 for my photos). It dries with no texture, and I recommend a shiny topcoat to make that holo finish pop.

Lucky 13 Lacquer Bad Apple (2 coats)
Price: $12
Cap: 120
Inspiration: Razor Blades in caramel apples

I 100% remember this urban legend going around when I was a kid. Bad Apple is a tri-thermal polish that changes from apple green (hot)/light brown (room temp)/dark caramel (cold) with lime green and rose color-shifting shimmer and silver flakies (plated with real silver for an extra-sharp shine). I had no idea thermals could change so drastically and so quickly. It's still hot here, so it took some ice water to get mine to change, but this will be perfect for most of the country where it's starting to get cooler. This will come with a clamshell of green and red holo apples for hand-placing. If you are at a Halloween party, you may get a happy surprise when this one glows green under UV light. I used 2 thin coats for my photos, and it dried with just a tiny bit of texture.

Noodles Nail Polish Devil in the Pine Barrens (2 coats)
Price: $12
Cap: No Cap
Inspiration: The Jersey Devil

So. Many. Flakies. That's what I thought when I saw Devil in the Pine Barrens for the first time. Natalie hails from New Jersey, so I'm not surprised she used this urban legend. It's a blacked brown jelly base with bronze/green aurora shimmer, green/caramel/orange iridescent glitters, gold flakes, copper/green color-shifting flakes, and UCC flakes. Whew, so much glitter and flakes. This dries with texture, so you may need to double up on topcoat to smooth it all out, but it's so worth it.

Pepper Pot Polish Skinwalker (3 coats)
Price: $11
Cap: No Cap
Inspiration: Navajo legend of a skinwalker

Up next we have Skinwalker from Pepper Pot Polish which is a teal crelly base with contrasting green shimmer, orange/green microglitter, teal/blue/purple chrome flakes, and iridescent glitter. I don't think my photos do this one justice. My husband complimented my nails while wearing this one, and that doesn't happen every day. I love a good contrasting shimmer, and it's quite noticeable in person. I used 3 thin coats for my photos, and it applied easily. It does dry with some texture, so you may need a second coat of topcoat.

Static Lacquer Woman in White (3 coats)
Price: $12
Cap: 250 bottles
Inspiration: The legend of the woman in white that haunts all back country roads

Finding out this one glows-in-the-dark was a happy surprise! I was done taking photos and went to get ready for bed when I was startled by the bright light emitting from my nails. The glow is blue-green, and make sure to "charge" it with bright light for best results. Woman in White is a white crelly base with green to blue shimmer that is quite noticeable in person. I used 3 thin coats for my photos, and it self-leveled well for a white polish. This one is very modern, and I love it. It dried with no texture and was easy to remove.

There you have it, folks! As you can see, the color and finishes for this month are quite broad. Thankfully most of these have no or high caps, except for Bad Apple, which I expect to sell out. Wishlisting is available right now, so make sure to add these to your list so you don't miss out this weekend.
